Mount Vista

NAMI Essex has recognized the need for appropriate housing for the mentally ill who no longer need intensive assistance with daily living activities.

Our forward thinking members, led by Regina Palo, looked for appropriate properties for housing for consumers in the Essex County area.  They raised funds and prepared grant applications to make the dream a reality.  Our organization was gifted with a generous donation from the Family Foundation, which was led by Ashley Goodman, a member of NAMI.  Unable to purchase a suitable building, NAMI decided to hold the funds and accrue interest on the money.  In 1991 Regina Palo suggested that an affiliate organization be established with an independent Board of Directors, predominately NAMI Essex members, to assure that the funds were used prudently to better the lot of consumers.  Thus, Mount Vista was born.

Mount Vista offers grants to consumers who apply for money to further a goal or help to establish independence.  Some may request money for educational endeavors; some seek assistance to buy or maintain a car and others may need clothes for a job.  A committee selects from among the applicants and funds totaling the amount of interest gained during the year are distributed at the annual meeting.  Our members are gratified to be able to assist individuals who are making their way toward a life of their own.
